San Francisco Moving and Resource Checklist

1. Change Your Address

USPS: File a change of address online at the USPS Change of Address Form.

California DMV: Update your driver’s license and vehicle registration through the California DMV Change of Address System.

San Francisco Assessor-Recorder’s Office: If you own property, update your mailing address using the Change of Mailing Address Form.

Banks & Credit Cards: Log in to your bank accounts and update your billing address.

Insurance Providers: Notify homeowner’s, renter’s, auto, health, and life insurance providers of your new address.

Employer: Update your address with your HR department for payroll and tax purposes.

Subscriptions and Deliveries: Update your address for:

  • Magazines and newspapers.

  • Online delivery services (e.g., Amazon, HelloFresh, Chewy).

  • Monthly subscriptions (e.g., Birchbox, Stitch Fix).

2. Transfer or Set Up Utilities

Electricity and Gas: Schedule to start, stop, or transfer service with PG&E or call 1-877-660-6789.

Water and Sewer: Set up or transfer your account with the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) or call (415) 551-3000.

Internet and Cable: Contact local providers like Xfinity, AT&T, or Sonic to schedule service installation or transfer.

Trash and Recycling: Set up or transfer service with Recology San Francisco or call (415) 330-1300.

3. Notify Government Agencies

Social Security Administration (SSA): Update your address at the SSA Change of Address Page.

IRS: File Form 8822 to notify the IRS of your address change.

Voter Registration: Update your registration through the California Online Voter Registration.

4. Transfer Records

Medical and Dental Records: Request to transfer your records to your new providers.

Veterinary Records: Transfer your pet’s medical records to a new veterinarian.

School Records: Contact your current school to transfer your child’s transcripts to the new district.

5. Cancel or Transfer Memberships

Gym Memberships: Review cancellation or transfer policies and notify your gym if needed.

Clubs or Organizations: Notify any memberships or associations of your move to update your information or transfer membership.
